What is this programme about

University College Maastricht is a Liberal Arts and Sciences Honours College that provides small-scale and individualised bachelor's education. As a department of the most international university in the Netherlands, Maastricht University, students are part of a truly international community, working and socialising with students from more than 50 countries. With the support of our committed staff, students can choose from more than 150 different courses in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Sciences to build an academic profile that helps them meet their goals.

Courses at UCM are taught using Problem-Based Learning (PBL). By using a combination of small-group work and individual research, students are in control of their own education. The PBL format helps students retain information better, teaches them to think about problems independently and allows them to develop their interpersonal skills. All teaching at UCM happens in small groups of no more than 12 students.

With a 95% student satisfaction rate (Keuzegids, 2015), UCM prides itself in being a close-knit academic community in which students socialise, engage in extracurricular activities, and pursue shared passions.

Curriculum information
UCM has an open curriculum, and offers a course catalogue containing more than 150 courses, skills trainings and projects. Students pick the courses that they find interesting and useful for their future studies, thereby creating their own academic profile.

Students choose one of our three concentrations: Humanities, Social Sciences, and Sciences. Students may focus on a particular discipline (e.g. psychology, economics, history, biology) or instead opt for courses around a combination of themes or disciplines.

In addition to the courses in the concentration, every student needs to complete the ‘academic core’ which consists of four courses that provide the fundamental knowledge that any academic should have. These courses are about the principles of scientific research, the major political issues of our time, historical developments in the world over the last 70 years, and why abstract concepts and models are vital in science. Students will also choose four courses outside of their concentration.

This ensures that students are able to think from different perspectives and understand how people in other academic areas think and work.

Admissions & Finances
UCM strives to attract highly motivated students with a genuine academic interest. Therefore, UCM has a selective admissions process that is designed to help the Board of Admissions assess whether there is a match between your academic interest and what UCM has to offer. There are 200 spots available for incoming students each year.

Students apply with their latest transcript, a letter of motivation and a proof of English proficiency. The Board of Admissions reviews and assesses the application and decides whether the applicant is invited for an interview. After the interview with two academic staff members, applicants will be informed of whether they have been invited to attend UCM.
