In principle, the programme takes four years. Students with excellent records and the required background may be eligible for the shortened three-year programme.
First year
The first part of the programme (first semester) starts with an orientation phase, in which you become acquainted with all kinds of jobs in the field of Civil engineering and the graduation variations HZ offers. You get subjects such as construction designing to get an insight in the stability of constructions above and underground. Furthermore, you follow courses such as water management and constructing in and with soil, which are often integrated. You also follow a number of Professional Core courses. In these courses you learn the general skills that you need in your future job. In the first semester these are, among others, English and Communicative skills.
In the second year you follow courses in subjects such as water management, urban road design and you deepen your knowledge of construction designing. This year, you also carry out your orienting work placement at a building site.
Third year
In the third year you will extensively study the theme of water by means of the courses Canals and Ports and Coastal and Bank Protection. In this year you also follow your minor.
Fourth year
The final year gives you the opportunity to accentuate your education in your own way. You may choose a number of optional courses in one of the fields of study: construction, water or underground building. Finally, you round off your studies with a five-month graduation project.
