Small Business and Retail Management (HBO)

The Retail Business School Leeuwarden is one of the most well known centers in the Netherlands for studying Small Business and Retail Management. Our curriculum meets the needs of industry of today and tomorrow. Our graduates are competent and skilled to face the challenges that lie ahead in the work place.

Stenden hogeschool offers an Small Business and Retail Management programme which is focused on serving the customer. Subjects which will be worked on while studying are Efficient Consumer Response (ECR), brand marketing, category management, trade marketing, financial management and information management.
Small Business and Retail Management students receive a thorough grounding in retailing. At the same time students will develop competencies which are essentials to become a successful retail manager.

Leeuwarden – Student City of the year
With over 23,000 Dutch and international students at several universities, Leeuwarden is truly a student town. Students dominate many aspects of social, cultural and economic life in the city. Not surprisingly, Leeuwarden has been voted the “Best Student City” of the Netherlands at several times in recent years.

Duration and Intakes
The programme takes four years to complete.
However, based on prior learning and / or work experiences, a certain amount of study time can be skipped or left out.

The study Small Business and Retail Management starts in September and in February.

Variants
You can follow this programme in full time and part time. There are three variants of choice within this education. These are:

Retail Management
The direction Retail Management at Stenden prepares you for management functions in retail. You will learn every side of the business. Graduates often start their career on the level of an assistant-manager, for example in a D.I.Y. store. But you can also work for instance as a sales manager in a warehouse, manager of a supermarket, HR-manager or a marketing function in a head office.

Fashion Retail
Are you someone who really wants to know what latest fashion looks like? During the study SMRB you can specialize in Fashion Retail. The first thing you think about when you hear the word fashion are clothes. However, the graduation subject Fashion Retail also focuses on the trend sensitive branches in general. Due to this you can end up in more branches from shoes-, to the interior branch. During this specialization from this education you learn everything about trend watching, styling and the composing of collections.

With the specialisation Fashion Retail you can end up in functions like purchaser for a fashion company, branch manager of a fashion shop, or you can work in a marketing function on the head office of a fashion company.

Small Business
The education Small Business at Stenden university is a broad education functioning on Small and medium enterprises. Typical for the Small and medium enterprises are especially that the entrepreneurs determines what is happening in an enterprise. This means that the success of the company depends on the vision, knowledge, and effort of one person: of you! Therefore it is important that you are able to bring a product or service on the market with enough competition power to win the market positions, to keep this and to improve it.

When you finish the study, you have enough knowledge and skills to start your own business and maintain it. However, with the diploma Small Business it is also possible to become a franchisee, or to advise other businesses. Working within an already existing company is another possibility. You can, for instance, start as a Business Unit Manager. This means you are responsible for a number of businesses in a certain area.
