Int. Business and Management Studies (HBO)

The Bachelor programme International Business Management has been set up to cater for the growing demand for young internationally-oriented managers. This need is fostered by the increasing internationalisation of the world economy. As a consequence of this, business enterprises and institutions, are forced to reconsider their international position. The study programme is geared to these international developments in the economy and politics. This 4-year degree programme, which is fully taught in English, is both broad and international. An international business person’s activities constantly involve international contacts, demanding special knowledge and skills in various fields, such as intercultural relations and international trade. Flexibility and adaptability are core elements of his activities. A broad knowledge of organisation, management, marketing, and finance and accounting makes the business practitioner an excellent negotiator at management level, both internally and externally. The International Business and Management programme caters to these requirements of the job market.

This programme offers students the possibility of obtaining a Double Degree. This means that upon graduation students will receive both the Bachelor of Business Administration degree of Avans University of Applied Sciences and the degree of a partner Business School abroad. To obtain this Double Degree, students will have to study at a partner school of renowned universities in the United Kingdom, France, Germany or the United States of America. In year 3 students can customize and add colour to their education by choosing a minor. The minors offered within this programme are Asian Trade, International Business Economics, International Business Communication, International Business Ventures and European Union Policies. Students who want to specialise in the Asian market can choose the major Asian Business Studies. In this major Chinese language and culture lessons are mandatory. All projects are linked with Asian business and extra workshops and training are organised in addition to the regular classes. On completion of the programme students will obtain a Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Moreover, they have great opportunities to continue with a Master programme at one of our partner institutes.

Your command of the English language should be at Proficiency level [e.g.TOEFL 550 or IELTS 6.0] to allow you to interact and participate successfully in coursework. Foreign students wishing to follow a programme in Dutch must take a Dutch language proficiency exam.

International Business and Management Studies
The increasingly global nature of trade and industry leads to greater international competition for large, middle-sized and small companies. A proactive organisation must therefore be able to collect and analyse foreign market-specific knowledge in order to take correct decisions about expansion. It must also be aware of international finance opportunities and political developments home and abroad.
In internationally oriented organisations, decision making is based on business administration and controlling, but also on awareness of cultural differences and a firm’s ability to adapt.

Openness to challenges, a critical mind and focus on results, excellent teamwork and self-management, intercultural discussion and negotiation skills - all these personal characteristics contribute to effective international business management.

Our education profile for your future
The most striking features of our IBMS study programme are:

	it is international, both in educational contents and student population
	the main phase is entirely in English
	it is based on a combination of elements from the traditional economics programmes in the fields of finance, accountancy, sales, marketing and management

	it offers practical training in international companies

IBMS students graduate with a real international orientation. They will usually end up in one of the many different positions ranging from international account manager, PR-manager, product manager or sales and marketing manager, to international treasury manager or human resource manager. Some graduates prefer to start their own businesses or become consultants. What about you?

The Propaedeutic Phase of IBMS is offered in German or Dutch in combination with English language training or entirely in English. The language of instruction during the Main Phase and Graduation Phase of IBMS is English. We also offer the entire four-year IBMS-programme in the English language. This option is open to all non-Dutch/-German applicants.To participate in this course the above mentioned language skills (IELTS/TOEFL) are required. Duration and Intakes
This study will take four years full time and starts in September and in February.

Study Programme
The programme focuses on oral communication, facilitating settlement in the Netherlands and prepare for the traineeship in a multinational and other companies.

Structure third and fourth year
The structure of the third and fourth year depends on the chosen specialisation. The curriculum includes a traineeship in the third and/or fourth year, as well as different modules. The course will be concluded with a final thesis/ research project.

Variants
During this study you can specialize in three directions:

Business to Business
In this specialisation attention is paid to the strategic choices that a company needs to make when it enters new international markets. Therefore, international business strategy is an important element in this specialisation.

Retail (& Small) Business
In this specialisation, students will receive a thorough theoretical grounding in the field of retailing. The retail sector can be defined as the interface between manufacturer or wholesaler and the individual consumer.

Food & Agri-business
All over the world people know and appreciate Dutch agricultural and food products, such as flower bulbs, tulips, meat, cheese, and so on. Many international food companies have their origin in the Netherlands like Unilever, Friesland Coberco Dairy Foods, and Sara Lee/ Douwe Egberts.
